Have you heard?

It's back to school time!

This means different things to different people, some have kids going back to K-12 school, for some it is the kids heading off to college. Those with no one in the household returning to school it still brings a sense of schedule change, cooler weather, more time at home with the busy travel season coming to an end.  With the majority of students returning to in person learning this will hopefully reduce some of the stress of at home learning and possibly the chance for some adults to return to the work place. Keep in mind even though we have been here before it is important to allow your children and yourself to transition back in to this routine.  After more than a year of at home learning and remote work it WILL be an adjustment.

All that being said some families have made the decision to continue their children's education at home.  Keep in mind it is important to create and keep a schedule for those classroom days, this will help with the learning process, create a mindset and makes it feel like a classroom.  If possible find a designated area in your home that is for classroom time, try to avoid using the sofa or anything that is super soft or has a lounge like feeling.  First off sitting on the soft, plushy furniture does not allow for good posture which can lead to other problems, they can tend to make a person feel sleepy or lethargic neither of which is conducive to learning.  Something else to consider be sure any type of electronic gaming is out of sight.

There may be some who will miss that extra time that was gained with the family during the pandemic which provided extremely light schedules as many things were cancelled.  Good advice for all, let's try to do what we can to maintain some of the NEW quality time we created, SOME is the imperative word as I know schedules are ramping back up and that goes for households with or without children.  As our schedules get busier it also means less time with those we care about.  One suggestion is to do what we can to be present or mindful, meaning if you are having dinner either at home or out, watching TV or a movie try a 'no phone' time.  'No phone' time is leaving your phone in a different room away from where you are at that moment.  This can also be good practice when you are alone reading, studying, eating, watching TV, sleeping, etc. Give this a try, have a designated area for phones that is away from the family room and bedrooms. When we can keep our minds on one thing it is better for our stress levels, it can help reduce our heart rate and lessen anxiety.  As a society we need to stop always looking for what is the next thing, we spend so much time worrying about the future or dwelling on something that has happened in the past that we miss what is happening right in front of us! YES I know this means missing out on what is happening on your social media feed but which is more important knowing what one of your social media 'friends' or 'followers' is doing or being completely present as your friend, spouse or child is telling you about their day?  Keep in mind some of your social media friends are people you really don't know that well or have any true emotional connection.  Social media can be fun and it can be a good way to connect with those that are far away or stay in touch with acquaintances but it is not what is happening in your real life.

The take away from this post is to be there where you are in the moment, be kind and considerate towards those around you, just something to think about and do with it what you wish.
