Push & Pull...

If you are pushing in your workout please be sure to also do some pulling

Since the invention of computers, tablets, cell phones, gaming systems, etc. we spend so much of our time in a forward reaching posture. Does the image to the right look familiar for either yourself or those around you?  Rounded shoulders, hunched back, head jutting forward are terms used to describe the posture we adapt when you are using technology.  Pushing and pulling is always important in your workout regardless of your posture, these moves combined help us maintain balanced body mechanics.  It is also a known fact you are stronger pushing than you are pulling so you tend to favor the pushing moves. Individuals also like to focus on the areas you can see as you face the mirror, but don't you want to look just as good from behind as you do from the front?  Combining your pushing (push-ups, chest press, etc.) and pulling moves (seated rows, reverse flys, etc.) will not only help to improve your posture but also reduce discomfort/pain in shoulders, upper back as well as tightness in the chest and shoulders.

This same strategy should also be applied to your legs. So much of our time is spent sitting which can cause the hamstrings, hip flexors, hips, quads and low back to become tight and or weak. It is just as important to focus on the back of the lower body, hamstrings & glutes, as well as the front, quadriceps, and toss in a little calf work if you like.

STRETCHING!!! In addition to strengthening you really need to be stretching all of these muscles to keep them flexible, strong and healthy.

Having muscle imbalance can cause stress on other parts of the body, headaches, illness, decreased flexibility and range of motion in addition to injuries.  Finding that balance is very important to your overall health and improved lifestyle. If you are looking for some help finding that balance please feel free to reach out to me.
