Go out with a BANG!!
I really like this quote from Carl Bard, it emphasizes you can start anew at any time in your life. I would like to take this time to express the advantages of beginning your New Year's resolution now, rather than when the new year begins.
Consider easing into your resolution(s) so you can develop new habits gradually and make sustainable progress over time. You can build momentum and motivation going into the new year, setting you up for success in achieving your goals. In addition to the jumpstart if your resolution is health or fitness the early start can also help to ease the stress of the holidays.
Let's take this time to consider how to approach resolutions. Focus on introducing good habits rather than focusing on eliminating bad habits. This approach does not leave you feeling like you are depriving yourself of something you enjoy. When introducing something positive you have a sense of accomplishment which in turn helps you to stay motivated. Over time positive changes can become ingrained in your routine and a natural part of your daily lifestyle.
A few examples:
You're trying to cut down on the amount of soda or sugary drinks you consume. Consider this approach, I am going to drink 16 oz. of water each day and gradually work my way up to 60 oz. per day. With this goal you are not thinking about the amount of soda you will not get to drink but as you make space for the water you most likely will consume less sugary drinks.
I have a goal of 10,000 steps per day but I just don't have the time. You can sneak those steps in without realizing it. Start by parking your car at the farthermost end of the parking lot at work, shopping area, etc. Take the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator whenever possible. Need to run an errand downtown just a few miles away, consider walking if it is safe. These little tips will not only help you with your step goal but you will also burn a few more calories, it gives you the time to slow down observe what is happening around and reduce some stress. Much better than figuring out how many miles you need to trek on the treadmill, which is totally boring.
Get out there, and get started, you can end the year and start the new year with a bang!!
Sincerely,
Ricarda 'Ricki' Alleman
